Single RCD fuse box installations were commonly installed during the 16th edition wiring regulations. Thes have been superceeded now with the 17th edition wiring regulations then the 18th edition wiring regulations. Only certain circuits are not permitted to have the protection offered by a RCD, older houses that have these fuse boxes installed are best getting them replaced with a ammendment 3 board which is metal.
The RCBO fuse box. this is what we recommend be installed in every house and not the dual rcd fuse box. this is an ammendment 3 fuse box, this means the chasis is metal, this is for fire protection. WE like the RCBO fus boxes because each circuit breaker is a circuit breaker and a 30ma RCD combined into one device. this prevents you being plummeted into darkness if a fault occurs because that affected circuit trips off and not half the fuse box like with the dual RCD fuse boxes. Downside is, a RCBO board costs a bit more but you pay for what you get in this life anyway, i have learned that over the years.
The dual RCD fuse box. exactly what it says on the tin, it has two master RCDS and each of these cover a handful of circuit breakers adjacent to it, however the problem with these boards is that each master RCD has a 30ma rating and when you put multiple circuits on each of the two master RCDS that 30ma soon gets eaten up by appliances emitting earth leakage, the result, the RCD trips and you are left with half the fuse box isolated and boat load of circuits off in your house thus leaving you clueless to know what has caused the fault. I get multiple phone calls each week about these boards causing customers a headache as they randomly trip off overnight.
